June marks the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation to the throne, which also marks another milestone in her reign; she is the longest reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom.
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born April 21, 1926. In 1947 she married Prince Philip and together have four children. In 1951, Elizabeth began standing in her father’s stead, at public appearances, as his health had begun to decline. In late 1951, her private secretary began carrying a draft accession declaration, in the event the King passed away while she was on tour.
While on an official visit in Kenya, King George VI passed away, and on February 6, 1952, Elizabeth immediately acceded to the throne. She was asked to choose a regnal name, and she chose to remain Elizabeth. Upon their return home, the family moved out of Clarence House in London and into their new home, Buckingham Palace.
Her Coronation took place on June 2, 1953, in Westminster Abbey, and all but the anointing and communion was, for the first time, televised.
Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 92nd birthday this year, and unlike the rest of us, she has two birthdays. Her actual birthday, which is April 21, and then there is the Official Birthday, which is set for around the end of May, or beginning of June. It varies based on each country, in the realm. The Official Birthday celebrations are marked, in the United Kingdom, with the ceremony of Trooping the Color, also known as, the Queen’s Birthday Parade.
The Queen is an exceptionally private person and rarely gives interviews, but she is the patron of over 600 charities and organizations. She has a lifelong love of Corgis, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and equestrianism. By all accounts, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, seems to value the time with her family at home. As we have seen in brief interviews and glimpses into the private life of the Royal Family, the love she has for her grand and great-grandchildren is special and remarkable. Unique to that of a grandmother.
The Sapphire Jubilee marks yet another remarkable milestone by an even more remarkable Queen. She has given her life to the people of the United Kingdom and over time has relinquished some of her royal duties to other members of the Royal Family, she still has a very active role as Queen.
Wishing Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II a joyous 92nd birthday and all the best wishes for continued success as she celebrates her 65 years as Queen of the United Kingdom.
God Save the Queen, Long May She Reign.
